Great North Run 2022
Campaign by UK Sepsis Trust (RCN 1158843)
The Great North Run is the world's largest half marathon with an incredible atmosphere, starting in Newcastle upon Tyne and finishing by the sea in South Shields.

Story

4 years ago I retired from teaching, On the evening of my retirement party I was unexpectedly taken ill. I had no idea what it was but my niece Molly recognised the symptoms of sepsis and insisted I went to the hospital immediately. That decision saved my life. After a period of time in hospital I was finally allowed home; weak and fragile but able to start my recovery. Many are not as lucky as me. I have been a runner for the last 12 years and getting back to Jelly Legs running club was a huge milestone and it took me a year to regain my strength and be able to run again! Every time I put my trainers on and head out for a run I am reminded how fortunate I am to be able to do it.

I had not really heard of sepsis and certainly didn't know the symptoms. 2022 is the UKST 10th Anniversary year -  My aim is that this run may help raise awareness, and spark the question: What is sepsis? Not everyone has a Molly on hand to advise! Thousands of deaths & unnecessary suffering may be avoided through knowledge & awareness of the symptoms.

Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.
