Story
On the 13th of August, we will be challenging ourselves to complete a 5K Tough Mudder run in an effort to raise money to support the charity, Mind.
Just like physical health, mental health is something we all have and must actively make an effort to look after. However, this is not always easy to do and sometimes we may need a little extra helping hand/guidance to get back on track. According to a 2007 household survey, approximately 1 in 4 adults in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. For children, this figure stands at about 1 in 6 as of 2021 (compared to 1 in 9 just 4 years earlier), and it is estimated that around 75% of mental health issues start before the age of 18.
Anyone of any age, gender, race, background, etc. can struggle with their mental health, but a lack of funding in the area combined with high demand (even more so with the impacts of covid) means that many are left to deal with long, backlogged NHS waitlists before they even have a chance of accessing any type of support.
This is where Mind comes in. There is a network of around 125 local Minds across England and Wales that offer specialised support and care based on the needs of the communities they support.
We decided we wanted to show our support by actively getting out there and raising money so that the wonderful work that Mind does can reach even more people. We felt that the challenge of completing a Tough Mudder, with its 13 obstacles in amongst a 5K run, was a fitting way to show this support; it felt like the closest thing to a physical representation of a mental health journey we could find.
We would really appreciate any support you may be able to offer, but completely understand that not everyone is in a position to be able to donate. Even just spreading awareness of our fundraising and the charity would be truly valuable support.
