Laurie Brophy Memorial Challenge 16/06/23

If you are reading this then maybe you knew Laurie well, or heard about his incredible exploits, or you know someone who is doing a challenge in Laurie's memory, firstly thank you for clicking the link and please read on to find out more about the Laurie Brophy Memorial Challenge day and how to be a part of it.If you'd simply like to make a donation in Laurie's memory that's wonderful and thank you so much. If you'd like to do a challenge in his memory follow these simple steps...Step 1. Pick a challenge, anything you like, to complete before or on 16/06/23. See below for more info and inspiration. Step 2. You can either simply post details of your challenge and share the link to this page - https://www.justgiving.com/team/lauriesmemorialchallenge - on your Social Media and maybe why Laurie inspired you. (If you would like to 'JOIN THE TEAM' and have your own fundraising page linked to this one, then click JOIN THE TEAM on this page and follow the instructions) Step 3. Leading up to or on the 16/06/2023, the anniversary of Laurie's passing, everyone taking part in a challenge shares their goals and achievements together through photos, videos or updates and hopefully spreads inspiration to people they know in one big celebration of Laurie's life.More about Laurie and why this is going to be a fantastic way to remember him...Laurence Brophy.. Laurie.. loved a challenge! Laurie wasn’t anything special in his eyes, he was an ex language teacher, not ex athlete or armed forces. He simply wanted to challenge himself in his later years, in order to stay young, to have something to focus on and to raise awareness and money for charities. He didn’t seek the limelight but he did say that he wanted to leave a legacy for others, the joy of keeping fit and healthy at any age.Laurie’s last challenge at age 89, was to climb the 3 Welsh peaks. Unbelievably, despite having oesophageal cancer he successfully climbed Snowdon on 17th September 2021, not only that, he slept rough the night before and after, in a sleeping bag, to raise awareness of homelessness and much needed funds for Llamau. Laurie passed away 16th June 2022 age 90. He didn’t want a funeral, typical of a man who didn’t want a fuss, even in his last days he was strong in spirit and as stoical as I can imagine a human could be. So as a memorial his family are inviting those who loved him, admired him, and were inspired by him, to do a challenge of their own or simply make a donation to Llamau in his memory. We invite you, your friends, colleagues, children, schools, whoever reads this and wants to take part, to do a challenge big or small, but something that fits with Laurie's values of fitness, community, the environment, charitable giving or all of those things.Unless you are super human like Laurie then this could be anything that challenges you, walk a mile with a friend, do a litter pick with your community, wear orange for Llamau for the day, swim in cold water, plant a bee friendly plant in your garden, run or cycle somewhere in nature, climb a hill, climb a mountain.. anything that stretches your limits a little, something you can work towards, something that might just set you on a new path to keeping fit and loving life like Laurie. Of course if you’re already fit and like Laurie lack just the right amount of common sense and self preservation, go big (within your limits) We’d love to see and share what you’re doing and be inspired by YOU.You are invited and welcome to share your own personal or group challenge far and wide and hopefully raise a bit of cash for Llamau who could really do with financial support to keep doing their incredible work. The financial situation in the uk is causing a huge increase in homelessness, and also has a huge impact on charities like Llamau who are working tirelessly to end homelessness! The key thing is though that in order to remember Laurie the invitation is to take part in a way that works for you, no pressure, just have fun and very much look forward to connecting with you in some way. Thank you so much.Katy Brophy (Laurie's daughter)
