Story
Hi there!
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
About me:
I have been really inspired by open water swimming in the last couple of years and fancied taking on the epic challenge of swimming as part of a relay team to support a great cause.
The cause:
I’ll be swimming in July this year to support Aspire and I would like to raise over £3,000. Every four hours someone is paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury and Aspire provides the essential equipment, advice and housing, plus assistive technologies to allow people with spinal cord injuries to live their lives independently. Please be as generous as you can with your sponsorship no matter how big or small, the more we can raise, the more of a difference it will make.
The epic and exciting challenge:
The English Channel is 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, but we will be battling the tides, current and shipping lanes, so will be swimming much, much further than that (potentially up to 30 miles). The rules of channel swimming are strict, we must have one swimmer in the water at all times, with no assistance available other than the pilot boat, and we will be swimming day and night. No wetsuits are allowed, which means we will be swimming in cold water in just our Speedos (other swimmers are available) and making friends with the jellyfish and other marine life (I love a swim with a porpoise).
Completing the crossing will mean multiple swim legs (and arms) per person until we reach France. How many hours will we be swimming I hear you ask? Half a day and a little bit more. That means lots of swimming costumes on standby and plenty of delicious snacks to keep up the energy levels. I’m not just doing it for the cake...honest! 😁 I may ask a passing boat for a croissant or tasty pastry...I will not lie...”Bonjour Monsieur! Avez vous une brioche?” I might say...you get the picture. Now for the important bit...
