“We really want you to come” everyone said... before they found excuses not to come themselves! But not everyone gave up, and three of us set about tackling the national Three Peaks Challenge on the first weekend in July 2008. With four days to go, one of our small group unfortunately had to drop out, leaving only two walkers... A quick local advertisement produced a new team member, training for a trek on Kilimanjaro! we think he'll find that easy after last weekend!
We left the car park in quite heavy rain at 08:30 on Saturday and started the clock running. We were back from reaching the top of Snowdon in under four hours, and left there feeling confident and quite pleased that although the summit was well in cloud at least it hadnt rained all the time.
Scafell Pike in the Lakes proved to be our undoing, and we ended up on the wrong path for a while, walked an extra mile and 400 feet of climb, had to take refuge from a thunderstorm near the summit and then get down after dark and in yet another bout of rain - a 7 hour epic.
By now we werent going to reach the third summit in 24 hours, but we all wanted to go on (in my case conditional on it not raining again) and headed for Ben Nevis, having decided to relax on the time and just finish in whatever time it took. In fact it only took us 3 hours and a bit to climb it. The summit was in cloud, but at least it wasn’t raining! We had been going for 25 hours by then, and took another 3 and 1/2 hours to get down again. I think we were tired!
We did it and we were pleased with our time, considering! And apart from a few aches and pains, we remained Safe and without injury.
To everyone who donated to the Listener in support of the walk - many thanks. It provided the motivation for keeping me going in those last few hours!
All the money raised is going to the Cotswold Listener. The charity is 30 years old and has decided to modernise! It’s purchased most of the new computing and recording equipment it needs, but before this can be set up and used efficiently, it desperately needs to re-furnish its office. This is cramped with old and bulky desks and tables. Flexible, modern office furniture is needed, a computer desk, additional lighting, recycling bins and cupboards. Then new chairs and some floor-standing screens to dampen background noise.
This is a huge expense for this small charity but without it, the listeners might not hear the benefits of ‘going digital’ for some time. Any contribution towards this ‘office refit’, however, small, will be very much appreciated – by the charity trustees, all the volunteers, and most of all by those with a visual impairment who receive the Cotswold Listener!
