December 2011: As my 30th birthday loomed on the horizon, the fears of old age just around the corner started to set in. In a state of mild panic (which can only be likened to the preludes of a mid-life crisis) I entered myself in London's Olympic Triathlon online after one too many dark rum and cokes... The next morning I thought that having almost 10 months to train and prepare, this might actually be do-able.
However (!), here I am two months before the dreaded Triathlon and I am yet to really start training. The only way I won't back out of swimming the 1500m, cycling the 40km, and running the 10km is to commit myself to enter it on behalf of a great charity I really believe in.
And who better to do it for than War Child: their work is amazing! Children don't ask to become involved in wars, yet often end up having to carry the physical and emotional scars of this through the rest of their lives. Volunteers at War Child do a great job supporting children to be children, and experience safety and enjoyment as much as possible. It's so easy to take for granted the relative safety we are all brought up in over in Western countries such as the UK. I therefore strongly believe we need to remember to do our best for people in other countries who might not have the benefit of stable governments and basic safety.
So if War Child isn't reason enough to give some money to charity, how about just a £1 to commit this lazy 30 year old to get herself to the start line?!
