Story
Thanks for supporting my fundraising.
December 9th 2019 marks 10 years since my Aunt Nancy passed away from Good Pasture Syndrome. My Aunt was one of the friendliest, loving and supportive people you could ever meet, and I miss her every day.
I wanted to do something to honour and celebrate her life, in a way that was a reflection of her. While she was not a runner, she inspired me to change my lifestyle and take up running, but she did love being outdoors in nature.
While this initially started as challenges to celebrate my Aunt's life, I thought I could also celebrate the lives of those that cancer took from me; who battled and survived; and are battling today.
But on Thursday 7th March my world came crashing down. While on a run, I got the call nobody wants to get and I've added another name to that list, the mantra in my head of those that every step is for. It's one I never wanted to add.
My Mommy, my best friend the one I can tell anything to, who inspires me, who kisses all my bruises and helps me feel like everything is going to be okay. My Mommy has stage 3 breast cancer.
This was already a very personal and emotional challenge for me, but it has become so much more. I'm not a doctor, I don't have a magic wand as badly as I want one to make it all go away.
But what I can do is run, and fundraise to help people like my Mommy, like my family for research and support. So i am going to complete a number
of challenges (not all of which are yet booked). So far to date I am going to participate in:
Ruscliffe 10k and 5K - 3rd March (both races on the same day)
Notts 20 mile - 17th March
Manchester Marathon - 7th April - second marathon
St Illtyds Ultra Marathon - 5th May - 50km and first Ultra
Baden Road Race - 18th May - 7 mile race in Baden, Ontario - placed 2nd female in my age category
Endure 24 Leeds - 29th - 30th June - 40 miles ran
York 10k - 4th August - 4th time running this event
Run Reigate - 15th September - first half marathon of 2019
Berlin Marathon - set to be my first world major but due to injuries over the summer/life stress have withdrawn as I would be unable to complete safely
Further races to be determined.
While my Aunt did not pass away from cancer, she was a breast cancer survivor and it is a disease that has had a large impact on my life affecting further family members and friends. My Uncle passed away in 1969; my Grandma was a breast cancer survivor; and my Grandpa was diagnosed with cancer, and later died in 1996 when I was 9 years old.
One of the things I will always remember, is the care the nurses provided my Grandpa but also the support they gave us. For a 9 year old, seeing all the equipment and my Grandpa being so ill was very scary and difficult to understand. The nurses took the time to explain what each machine was, and how it was helping Grandpa. They also encouraged me to not be afraid and to speak with him, even though he was in a coma they assured me that he would be able to hear me. I will forever be grateful for their care and support. While these nurses were not from Macmillan, they had a lasting impact on my life.
The work Macmillan does is amazing. They are here to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing physical, financial and emotional support.
