Story
I like running. I regularly run 5k, 10k, and I've even done a couple of half marathons in my time. Over the last year being able to get out and run with the permitted number of people has kept me sane and happy. But I've always said I could never do a marathon.
Challenge the Wight 2021 – GP Sport
Fortunately Challenge the Wight isn't an actual marathon. It's a "unique trail marathon or long distance walk across the Isle of Wight at night". When I mentioned on one run that after lockdown it would be great to have a girls' night away this really wasn't what I had in mind....
My every supportive family have already identified various challenges for me - staying awake past midnight, not getting lost, not falling over - before we even come to the actual endurance aspects of covering 26 miles! Fortunately one of our merry band, Gill, is an experienced ultra marathoner, and has put together a comprehensive training plan for us which includes 6-8 mile mid-week "recovery runs" and a schedule for weekly "long runs" that includes a 22 mile epic.
I don't usually seek sponsorship when I'm running, but am doing so this time because I'm more than a little daunted about what is in store - both the training and the event itself. With you backing me it will be that much harder for me to back out!
I've chosen to support Home-Start Isle of Wight for this event because I want to be able to make a real difference to Island families who are struggling. Most parents have the help and support they need from friends and family but for those who don't life can be so very hard. Home-Start staff and volunteers offer regular practical help and emotional support to help parents when they need it most.
Supporting parents through difficult times gives them a much needed break, improves mental health, improves confidence and raises self-esteem, improves relationships between parents and their children, supports young children with their physical and emotional development and allows everyone to have fun together.
Please give what you can, or if you'd rather do make a donation instead to your preferred charity.
