Flora London Marathon 2009 · 26 April 2009 ·

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

For those of you who don’t yet know the news… wait for it…… I am running, or should I say ‘attempting’ to run the London Marathon in April 2009.

To make the run worthwhile, and to give me an incentive to reach the finish line, I have decided to run for a charity.  The charity I have chosen is ASPIRE, who support people with spinal injury.  Spinal cord injury has a devastating effect on the 1,200 people who become paralysed each year.  The individual affected will lose muscle and sensory control and the vast majority become full time wheelchair users for the rest of their lives.  ASPIRE’S projects and services have a very simple goal – to provide the support needed to take those who use them from injury to independence.

Friends and family, you all know how much of a challenge this will be for me, not just the marathon itself but all the months of training that’s required beforehand (and yes that does mean swapping boozy nights out for early morning runs!!)  I ask you to please dig deep and sponsor me online. I know this may be a lot to ask what with the credit crunch and all, so for those of you who are unable to sponsor me, please show your support by coming to watch on 26 April!

Thanks in advance, your support will spur me on during those cold dark nights when I go running!
