Story
I am running the Cardiff Half Marathon on 27 March 2022 to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK in memory of my dad, Patrick Wymer. This is my first half marathon so it's slightly daunting but I'm excited for the challenge!
My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in 2017 and died in January 2020. During his illness dad was an active supporter of Bowel Cancer UK. Alongside fundraising for the charity with many friends, family and colleagues, he also campaigned to lower the bowel cancer screening age and raised awareness of bowel cancer symptoms. He took part in focus groups, did numerous media interviews and wrote a blog which has had over 80,000 visitors. He spoke at events including a reception at the Senedd to mark the launch of Bowel Cancer UK's 'Spotlight on Bowel Cancer in Wales' report to an audience of medical professionals, politicians and patients. He also spoke at the Bowel Cancer UK staff away day sharing his experience of living with stage 4 bowel cancer with staff from across the organisation.
I'm so proud of everything my dad achieved and very grateful to the amazing team at Bowel Cancer UK for the support they showed him during his illness. Running the half marathon in his memory is a way of me being able to continue his legacy and give something back to a charity who were there for us when we needed it most.
I'd be so grateful for any donations in support of this charity who do such important work to improve survival rates and support people affected by bowel cancer.
Thank you x
