SWV 2023 Ski Habilitation week

SWV Ski Week 2023 · 6 March 2023 to 12 March 2023 ·
In March 2023 I will be returning on the Supporting Wounded Veterans “skihabilitation” week in Switzerland as a “buddy” to help a group of around 25 seriously injured veterans get the most out of this truly life-changing week. In the run up to this week, I would like to raise as much as possible for this incredible charity.
Having volunteered earlier this year for this ski week, I have seen first hand how the week provides a truly transformative role in the veterans journey of recovery, and I couldn’t be more honoured to be joining them again next year. I also now know, and can wholeheartedly assure you that this is not a ski holiday!!
The ‘Skihabilitation’ week will take place in the Swiss Alps, and aims to be a pivotal moment in what for many is a long journey to recovery. The veterans have a range of different injuries, both physical and mental, which impact them all heavily. The week hopes to help them regain their fitness, build self-confidence, and give them a chance to experience a new skill in the beauty of the mountains. Many have felt restricted by their injuries, and never imagined being able to ski, but with the help of the adaptive ski instructors and equipment will get the chance to give it a go. In doing so many feel they can enjoy a sense of freedom, find happiness again, and re-engage a sense of purpose.
As a ‘ski buddy’, I will be there, alongside a veteran or small group of veterans for the week, to help them wherever needed. It may require gathering kit, helping them from a tumble, providing a listening ear, or just letting them talk. I will also do my best to help give them a fun and unforgettable week.
Where SWV stands out as a military charity, is that this week is only the very start of the help they provide these veterans. The ski week enables them to personally engage with each veteran, to understand their injuries and discuss ambitions for the future.
On returning back home, the charity continues their support with mentoring, pain management programmes, training and personal support, in whatever way it is required, with the aim of it leading to long-term employment. And the results speak for themselves. Following the programme, over 90% of veterans maintain their, or find new employment or occupation.
I was truly humbled by my first experience as a Buddy, and feel passionate about continuing my support, and I hope I can count on yours as well. Our wounded veterans have given so much to us, I feel it is our duty to give back to them, and help with their ongoing recovery. Please support as generously as you can.
Thank you so much xx
