Story
Thank you so much for visiting my Just Giving page! This amazing charity supports children and their families in some of the poorest regions of the world. It provides access to education and gives kids the best possible start in life.
During lockdown Global Care supported over 13,000 children worldwide through the devastating impact of the pandemic. This campaign focuses on one of the hardest hit communities — a Dalit shanty-town community in Patripul, near Mumbai, India.
Families typically live in one small shack, around 9 square metres (10 foot square). They’ve no running water, no toilet, no separate rooms, often no light or power. Extended families have suddenly been confined to these spaces, and risked police beatings if found breaking the rules.
Worse still, the restrictions have meant that people were suddenly unable to work, and with no income many families began to starve. The organisation has kept these families alive by providing basic food parcels.
Global Care now needs funds to continue this work and support the children in returning to education. It not only provides the support each child needs, but also takes care of their families. Through provision of basic food and medical care, the organisation engages and encourages families, giving them the financial relief to know they can survive without their children having to work or beg.
The supper & shack challenge
To help raise these funds I'm taking part in the Shack & supper challenge. I can never experience what it's like to live in this community but as a show of solidarity with these families I am going to:
1) Live off the same food one person would be allocated in a Patripul food parcel. Over 5 days all meals will be made from 500g rice, 500g flour, 350g chickpeas, some vegetables and a small amount of cooking oil, with a calorie intake of around 1,200/day.
2) I will be confined to one small room for a day with no gadgets / books/ distractions. Like the Patripul families I will have a limited budget to pay for water, food, power for cooking and toilet trips.
As an ‘incentive’ Global care are allowing the following extras based on how much money I can raise!
- £75- You can have some salt & a spice of your choice
- £150- You can have one cup of tea per day - no milk though!
- £200 - Going to the toilet is now half price
- £400- You can have a shower without paying for water
- £500 - You are allowed a technological device
