Story
After going back and forth between York, London and Birmingham for interviews, selection days and a training weekend, I am really excited to say that I have a place with International Citizen Service, (ICS) the UK’s leading global volunteering programme!
ICS is run by six of the most respected charities in international volunteering. The charity I will be working for is RESTLESS DEVELOPMENT.
ICS only works with projects that have specifically requested its help – and where the energy and skills of young volunteers can make a direct impact.
I have been placed in Freetown, Sierra Leone for 12 weeks, where I will be one of 30 young volunteers (15 from the UK, 15 from Sierra Leone) helping to tackle Sierra Leone’s high rate of unemployment through delivering workshops on computer literacy, CV and interview skills, career options and entrepreneurship in local schools.
This placement is fully funded by the Department for International Development but each volunteer is asked to raise £800 to go directly towards Restless Development as proof of commitment to the programme and to raise funds for the work Restless does with some of the poorest people in the world.
So...what will your money go towards?
£50 funds a community awareness campaign on health issues including HIV/AIDS
£250 enables our peer educators to support an income generating programme for a women’s group
£600 can train the staff of a health clinic
£3000 funds a Youth Week for 200 students, educating them about HIV/AIDS and life skills
