Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As most of you are aware, I have decided to take up the challenge and do another marathon (26.2 miles). However, this time I will be taking to the streets of Brighton rather than London. Obviously this can only mean that I have finally gotten over the trauma of running the London marathon in 2009 and as friends and family were aware my first words after crossing the line in 2009 were “I’m never doing this again". But the support I got has overpowered the tears, aches, being unable to walk properly for weeks, gruelling training in snow, wind, heat and rain (sounds tempting doesn’t it) and I’m ready to put myself through it again for a fantastic cause.
I will be running for Alzheimer's Society, which is a charity that is close to me and my family, as well as millions of other people affected by this awful disease. My Nan was diagnosed with dementia about 10 years ago, and its something that we are still unable to come to terms with or understand. It seems unfair how it can just takeaway someone’s independence in an instant, and how upsetting it can be for those close to them.
Alzheimer's Society is the leading support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers.
There are 750,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to one million by 2025.
Alzheimer's Society is a membership organisation, which works to improve the quality of life of people affected by dementia in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Many of our 25,000 members have personal experience of dementia, as carers, health professionals or people with dementia themselves, and their experiences help to inform our work.
The Society's fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms. Through our network of local services, we touch the lives of over 30,000 people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers. Every year, more than a million people make use of the information we provide.
Through campaigning and lobbying we strive to influence government policies and raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia and the people who care for them. And through our research programme we work to improve the knowledge we have about dementia and its treatment - and pursuing the ultimate goal of finding a cure.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Any donation is extremely appreciated.
So I say bring it on to all the training, snow, tears, and tantrums!! And on the 10th of April 2010 I will be running for my Nan, and everyone else that has been affected by this disease.
Thank you for reading my page, and thank you in advance to all my family and friends who will not only put up with my moaning after every long run, but who will also be there for me every step of the way and give me unconditional support.
Alice xx
