Thanks for visiting my page!
My name is Alice and I decided to set out on an adventure to run (read: jog/plod) around the coast of Britain. Starting on 28th November, with a 3 week 'adjustment period' before I'm back for Christmas for about a week's break 🎄!
I managed to cram 10 kilos of essentials into my bag: a tent, a sleeping bag, some clothes and cooking gear. So aside from the odd B&B stay or folk who've kindly offered to put me up for the night, this will be a self supported adventure.
The nature of this adventure is inspired by Elise Downing's 2015 coastal running adventure, which you can read about in her book 'Coasting'. Aside from a genuine desire for adventure, my motivation for this is to mark the end of the last 5 years of my life. When I was 18 years old and fresh into a degree programme, my dad suddenly died from what we thought was a non-dangerous heart condition and I struggled immensely thereafter. His passing was so hard on my whole family, he was such a loving, sunny and quirky person! I lost the motivation for my studies, fell into quite a depression and developed a chronic case of insomnia to top it all off. Life was just stagnant because I didn't know how to help myself but I also didn't want to burden others with my problems, especially my mum and siblings since they were going through the same grief I was. I was stuck with blind determination to either get graduated or get eventually kicked out of university so that I could move on from what happened and end that chapter of my life. Finally, I got my degree and I wanted to kickstart my life again!
Despite the primary selfish motivations of personal growth and self actualisation after a traumatic period, I want to do some greater good with it too. Hence why I would like to raise money for the two charities which are closest to my heart: the British Heart Foundation and Mind.
If I can set up the JustGiving team page right for the two fundraising pages, you should be able to choose which you fancy donating to. I didn't realise it wasn't so easy to split a fundraiser between two charities but hopefully this works out ok!
If you want to keep up with me on my journey, I've been posting regular updates on my Instagram page and on my Strava
