Story
We are two very passionate dietitians, who will be heading to Ethiopia with the Project Harar team in February 2020 for the 4th year running! Project Harar is a charity that provides access to treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration services in Ethiopia for people with facial deformities.
We will be taking part in the Complex Medical Mission alongside a fantastic team of local and international nurses, surgeons and doctors to provide life-changing surgery to adults and children with facial disfigurements. These disfigurements can lead to difficulties with eating, drinking and speaking. They may become ostracised by their communities and be unable to lead normal lives. We know that many are malnourished.
We are donating our annual leave time and our expertise to this wonderful charity. Our role (as dietitians) is to improve the nutritional status of our patients prior to their surgery and ensure that they are well fed throughout the healing period. Good nutrition is vital leading up to and following any surgery and we will work hard to give our patients the best chances going forward. Last year we provided our delicious home made drinks throughout the pre-op period and saw improvements in just 2 weeks! We worked tirelessly throughout the surgical weeks to provide nutrition via naso-gastric tube feeds and easy-to-eat foods.
