Story
After running my cancelled 2020 races on a hastily hired treadmill or alone early on a morning, I'm hoping to actually run in some organised events this year! Impossible to say which ones will go ahead but whatever happens I'm aiming to run 750 miles in memory of Craig.
I'm running to raise money for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation which aims to improve early detection and treatment of cancer. As many of you know, my partner Craig died in 2015 following a complex rare illness caused by cancer. Craig became seriously ill early in 2013. After significant deterioration later that year, he went on to spend almost 18 months in Intensive Care while undergoing many treatments for an extremely rare response to cancer called Paraneoplastic Neurological Disorder. Only 38 people in the world were reported to have had the same antibody which identifies the illness. Although chemotherapy destroyed the cancer, it was too late as the autoimmune response had left Craig ventilator dependent, incapable of eating and unable to move his body.
I was with Craig every day. He had a short spell in neurological rehab but ultimately his body could not take any more and his life was cut tragically short when he was just 47. Ayesha lost her Dad days before her 15th birthday and I was widowed at 31. Craig is loved and missed every day. He was a brilliant Dad, partner and friend... A whirlwind of chatter and chaos, thoughtful, caring, principled, intelligent and funny. His relentless energy, enthusiasm and commitment in his personal and professional life touched so many people. I know that he would have been incredibly proud of the wonderful young woman Ayesha has become and all that she has achieved, just as I am.
I'm doing this for Craig, for those I know who have survived cancer and in memory of others loved by me, my friends and family who we have lost to this horrible disease. If you can sponsor me, another step will be taken towards stopping other people from going through such a devastating experience. Any donations, no matter how small, will be really appreciated.
