This April we will be running 26.2 miles for Ovarian Cancer Action the UK’ s research charity dedicated to making ovarian cancer a survivable disease.
Ovarian cancer is one of the most deadly gynaecological diseases, claiming 4,200 women's lives a year. At the moment women in the UK have 1 in 50 chance of being diagnosed with this type of cancer which makes it a frighteningly common disease. However, sadly many are diagnosed too late for treatment to be effective. Symptoms are often attributed to other common conditions by medical professionals. By running the London Marathon and raising funds for this amazing charity, we hope to be able to make a meaningful contribution to the work that is currently being carried out to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. The hope is that more woman will be able to be diagnosed at the earliest stage possible. Early diagnosis means a woman's chances of surviving for five years or more doubles from just 46% to more than 90%, an incredibly big difference.
Having both personally known people affected by this awful disease, Ovarian Cancer Action is a charity both of us hold close to our hearts. We are only too aware of the impact this devastating disease can have not only on the person themselves but also their family and friends. To be able to raise awareness and potentially save lives would be amazing.
Any contribution, big or small, can help make a difference. Just £7 can enable a GP to update their knowledge of ovarian cancer and best practice for early diagnosis, whilst £250 can fund a whole day of life saving research.
Together we aim to raise £6,000. Having never run a full marathon before, we're sure many months of training and blisters lie ahead, but it will all be worth it when this total is raised! We would be so grateful for any contribution to help us achieve our aim.
Thank you so much for your support as we begin our journey in the fight against ovarian cancer.
