Having NEVER been on a road bike before January and the only bike riding experience over the last 20 years being riding from Thorpeness to Aldeburgh a few times on a rusty mountain bike this is a HUGE challenge for me. Those of you that know me well will already know this. I have been petrified of the roads, of potholes, of cars, of having to clip in, of not knowing where I’m going, of training on my own and of generally having such poor bike handling skills. If you saw me on one of my first training rides I was probably going downhill slower than I was pedaling up. I still have a death grip and am struggling with ‘Handlebar Palsy’, but I am hoping I can address this over the next few weeks as my confidence and ability grows. Having very nearly bailed out over half-term I have left it until now to do my Just Giving Page and am hoping your donations will help to spur me on even further.
I am doing the London Revolution to raise money for CLIC Sargent and on a personal level to show my support and true admiration for the Madigan family; Cerys, one of my best friends since university (& Immy’s Godmother), and her gorgeous son Owain who 2 years ago was diagnosed with AML Leukemia. After many months in hospital, three courses of aggressive Chemotherapy and a Bone Marrow transplant Owain was finally able to ‘ring the bell’ and is now thankfully in remission.
Their journey has been a grueling one, but eased and supported by their CLIC Sargent social worker who has been constantly available and continues to offer vital support in this new phase of their lives. Being based in Bristol meant that Owain could be treated in one of the country’s best children’s hospitals. However, the Madigans met many families who had to be relocated and sometimes separated from the rest of their family in order to be treated. This was only made possible by the provision at Sam’s House and CLIC House; both fully funded by CLIC Sargent.
And so that is why I am pushing myself WAY out of my comfort zone, to raise money for this incredible charity so that they may to continue to do the amazing work they already do and more.
