On Mon 26th October our son Alex (11) was admitted to Bristol Children's Hospital with suspected appendicitis. He was taken to operating theater 8pm the following day for what was planned to be a 45 min to 1.5 h procedure. His operation turned out to be a complex case and lasted 4.5 h. Without a doubt this was the scariest moment in our lives. I can barely remember returning to the hospital the following morning to see Alex so weak, helpless and barely able to talk.
This was the beginning of a really slow recovery process over the next week where surgeons, doctors, consultants, nurses and many other staff in the Penguin ward of the Bristol Children's Hospital did an amazing job supporting Alex, helping him to overcome pain, sickness, and get stronger day after day. All staff were absolutely fantastic: nice, kind, professional, compassionate, warm, supporting, looking after Alex (and myself, when I had a bit of a moment) day and night and providing best medical care in these critical and challenging times.
To support the Bristol Children's Hospital Alex decided to raise funds and to do this, he is setting up a personal challenge: just over one week after being discharged from the hospital Alex will start walking with the target to achieve 400K STEPS by Christmas.
All money will be going directly to the hospitals' charity helping to provide state of the art care to its children patents.
Thank you for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page and supporting Alex's challenge and the Grand Appeal charity.
