Story
Hi, I’m Alex from Bolton and I’m running the Manchester Marathon to raise money and awareness for the organ donation team at Bolton Hospital.
From a young age, raising awareness for organ donation has been at the forefront of my life. My mum (Zoe) was the face of the national organ donation campaign and after her death helped boost registration of potential donors by almost 11,000.
Zoe (25 at the time) sadly passed due to two successive brain tumours, but in the months leading up to her death created a legacy, that to do this day will help to prompt the importance of organ donation.
Zoe’s dying wish was to donate her body tissue to help research into diseases such as the cancer which ended her life. Her eyes were also donated to be used to help four people to see. Even her last moments were dedicated to helping others and just days before she died she said: "I feel so proud that I can help others once I'm gone. It's not about me, it's about you. Get thinking, get talking and get involved. It started with devastating news but at least I can still help."
I want to carry on this legacy.
A lot of people my age are unaware of the importance of organ donation and the positive impact it can bring from loosing a loved one. It’s a silver lining, but being able to give others a better quality of life is not only heroic it’s noble.
