In November 2023 when 6 months old, our little boy Axell suddenly became incredibly ill; this started with a cough which deteriorated rapidly throughout the day. Our local hospital told us that Axell needed to be sedated and put on a ventilator to help him breathe.  The South Thames Retrieval Service picked us up and took him to Evelina’s paediatric intensive care unit - Axell had RSV and bronchiolitis which had caused his right lung to collapse.  We have never been so terrified or felt so helpless. 

The nurses and doctors at Evelina were amazing and we couldn’t fault them; they were so calm and friendly and made us feel at ease.  The 24/7 care they provided was amazing.  Without them looking after our baby, I don’t even want to think about what could have happened.

Thankfully he was taken off the ventilator after 4/5 days and we are so proud of how strong he was throughout and how well he has recovered.
