Sahara 250 km Marathon · 3 October 2010
Hey, people
Thanks for taking the time to come by and supporting me on my run through the Sahara desert in order to raise money for SOS Africa.
As you might be aware of, I am taking part in my second 4 Deserts event this October - the Sahara Race. I ran the Atacama Crossing in Spring '09. The pictures shown here are from that race and give an indication of what awaits me. The Sahara Race itself is a 250 km footrace in 6 stages from the 3.10. till the 9.10. The race will be staged in the Egytian part of the Sahara desert. The first four stages each roughly have the length of a marathon, the fifth stage will be about 94km. The organiser provides tent and water - everything else has to be carried by the competitors. All this takes place at temperatures of up to 50 degrees during the day. I am taking on this physical and mental challenge in order to raise money and awareness for SOS Africa. Thus let me introduce this organisation in a bit more detail.
SOS Africa is a UK registered charity, which funds the education and care of underprivileged children from the poorest areas of Southern Africa. The charity's mission is to Empower Through Education. The charity provides sponsorship for children from the poorest areas of South Africa through their education and the care and support that these children desperately need. The reason I decided to raise money for this organisation is on the one hand that its size allows it to operate very effectively (more than 90% of the donations reach the children directly) and on the other hand that I truly believe in the organisation's motto "Empower Through Education". Every donation does make a difference - so please support me by helping those in need.
Thank you very much for your help and support!
All the best, Alex
