Story
Although the rising levels of domestic abuse and the tragic cases of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa have caught the media attention over the last couple of years, sexual violence against women and girls has been a long term problem in the UK. While I have not been a victim myself, many women close to me have been hugely impacted by acts of rape and sexual violence in all its forms. Indeed, data illustrates that at least 80,000 women are raped and 400,000 are sexually assaulted every year in the UK, with 1 in 3 teenage girls experiencing some form of sexual violence from their partner. These figures should force us to reckon with the disturbing aspects of our culture.
While there are other ways we can help stop sexual violence against women, rape crisis centres are on the front lines, doing extraordinary work for vulnerable people. For this reason, in March, I will be running with Cambridge Rape Crisis Centre who help to support local women and girls who have been affected by rape and sexual violence. The work they do is really impactful and any donations would be very welcome. If you are not able to donate please consider sharing this post.
