Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer.
Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. It does not discriminate and can happen to anyone.
My dad, Nick Pitt was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma at the age of 29 in 1984, a rare tumour in adults. Following surgery where the whole tumour was removed at The Royal Free Hospital, followed by the need for a VP shunt, he underwent six weeks of gruelling radiotherapy to the brain and spine. This was followed a year later with chemotherapy. It was a very worrying time for all his family but dad always thought he would get better, always the optimist !
He slowly recovered over the next few years but had permanent problems with his balance and fitness.. he previously played cricket at his local club and hockey for Sussex, which he could no longer do, .. and he hated that although his hair grew back it was very sparse and fine. He returned to full time work and in 1987 my brother was born followed by me in 1991. He was followed up by The Royal Free for 10 years and was then discharged.
Dad lost his hearing in 1998, we were told likely caused by radiotherapy damage, and developed hypopituitarism for which he needed multiple medications. He had many admissions to hospital over the past 15 years with pneumonia and sepsis but always bounced back. His mobility became very poor though and he had multiple falls and was later diagnosed with vascular dementia.
Sadly he contracted Covid in April last year and passed away on 24 June from complications of Covid .. a stroke and pneumonia at the age of 65 .. 36 years after his brain tumour diagnosis. He was a much loved husband, father, and grandfather.
We are all very grateful for the fantastic treatment he received over the years and I hope to raise funds by running the Brighton Half Marathon for further research into this devastating disease.
Please help Brain Tumour Research with their vision to find a cure.
