Story
I have a good friend who until recently was suffering from cancer.
Dan was a climber, a skier, a surfer, a kayaker, a runner, a swimmer, a cyclist and a lover of the outdoor life.
He kept them all going for as long as he could and was determined to get back to them until the end. He had a few routes like the one in the photo left to do!
But I’m sad to say that he was forced to spend the final weeks of his life at Prospect Hospice, where he went for palliative care.
Prospect made his pain more bearable and he and his family have all told me how wonderful they were right up until the end.
Dan died peacefully on 6 June 2022 with his parents there by his side.
There’s nothing that I could do for Dan in the end, other than to be a friend. But by raising funds in this way, I can give something to Prospect in his name as a thanks to them for making the final weeks of his life more bearable.
As to the run. It will be a real challenge for me. At 32 miles, it’s quite a long one; longer than I’ve ever done; and it has quite a lot of uphill. In fact it’s just the sort of thing that he might have enjoyed himself when he was feeling stronger.

I’m not doing it in a big team. There’ll be no T-shirt and no jamboree. Our friend Rich Smith has kindly agreed to drive me down and take me home again.
Other than that, I will run it alone with my thoughts and they will be for my friend and those like him.
If you’re reading this, then I hope that you’ll donate both in his name and those others who need Prospect Hospice and those others like it.
