What has spurred me to do this (as any rower would tell you: terribly painful) thing?
Like any long-lived club, RRC has reached a stage where its exceptionally (100+ year-)old boathouse is falling apart, and the other old buildings around it have reached the end of their life. To continue to survive and host regional events that bring joy to so many, this is something that must be done.
RRC has perhaps the best stretch of water for rowing in the UK, or even the world: >10km of water, beautiful Cheshire scenery, it's fairly well sheltered in all directions, has minimal traffic and is well controlled throughout the year.
Not only this, but RRC is a laid-back, inclusive club. It strikes a middle-ground, between fiercely competitive training and idle Sunday-afternoon paddling, which brings together people from a wide cross-section of society. It hosts popular events and supports many others across the country, from fancy-dress dragon boats at Ross-on-Wye Regatta to the National Championships, and the World Masters.
I will be adding my mileage to the Runcorn Rowing Club Virtual Row to Australia to raise funds for the new boat house.
I am aiming to raise £180 towards the overall total of £10,000. Will you please donate £5 to push me through 19min of pain?
Thanks,
Alex
