Update on progress: Ran Half Marathon in London(run to the beat) and finished it......in 2hrs 1 min. not bad for first one. so now back to continue training. The hard bit is now till the race.
So I recently signed up to do the Dublin Marathon. To those that know me you may be suprised, cause I have been inactive and against running for so long. I have always been a rugby player through my school life into university and beyond. That all came to an end when I took one to many hits and my knees gave up. I couldn't run without them swelling up and I guess I lost my passion and drive to keep fit. I should know better being a physiotherapist and should have rehabilitated my knees a lot better. I did try and get back into it but never really focused on CV just weights adn slowly the pounds started piling on.
So what changed, well I had a huge wake up call to show me how lazy I had become and what it had done to me and the people around me. So in a moment of weakness I signed up for the Dublin Marathon. My obvious goal is to complete this and in a good time, which means a lot of hard work and requires motivation to continue through to it. I have found my drive to push forward and want to maintain this in the future.
This brings me to my charity, I was looking around for something that meant something to me or that I would be happy running for. I came across Tommy's. This is a charity that helps fund three research centres in the UK, including St Thomas' in London, St Mary’s in Manchester and the recently established Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, which focus their research efforts on different issues relating to pregnancy. They lead the way in maternal and fetal research in the UK. To give every baby the best chance of being born healthy, we work to fund medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth and miscarriage.
The charity page also holds lots of information on pregnacy as a whole, including how to get pregnant, how to have a healthy pregnacy and information on complications of pregnacy. I feel that this is something i can help raise money for, especially with the recent high profile misscarriages and the growing concern women have with the complications of getting pregnant. I am a little more aware of how this subject can affect women both mentally and physically when planning for a child and previously I think i was too naive and immature to truely understand.
Hopefully this charity can help people with their questions, concerns and help move the research forward.
