Story
A few friends and I are planning on partaking on the Mongol rally which involves us driving from Battersea Park to the captital of Mongolia, Ulaanbaatar, in a 1 litre engine VW polo. The Mongol rally, despite the coughing old rust buckets that you call cars and the loons who drive them, is organised not only in the spirit of adventure but also for a great cause. The official charity of the rally is Cool earth which its primary aim is to prevent the irrevocable destruction of the rainforests in particular it protects rainforest that without intervention will be destroyed within the next 18 months.
Unlike many other charities of similar character, they actively oppose the culture of "Green colonialism," this kind of errant force adopted by many environmentalist groups. i.e They aren't Tree hugging scandal weavers, they just think the world would be a bit crap without rainforests... Which unless you are terrified of plants probably makes some sense! They also spend over 90% of their proceeds directly on their projects unlike their peers who have astronomically cost and governance ratios.
Over the last 40 years, half the world’s rainforests have been destroyed. That’s why the Cool Earth Charity was started.
They don’t create reserves or put up fences. They don’t buy land. Instead, they put indigenous people back in control of the world’s most endangered rainforest.
These people have lived in the forest for countless generations. Their homes are now on the frontline of deforestation. They have the most to lose from deforestation.
By building better incomes, better schools and better clinics, Cool Earth give there partner villages the resources they need to keep their forest intact.
Cool Earth is now working alongside 65 rainforest villages throughout the world.
These partner villages are protecting over 350,000 acres of forest that lie directly in the path of chainsaws and bulldozers. The clever part is that these villages form a shield to make the neighbouring forest inaccessible to loggers – saving millions of acres of further forest.
