Story
We are running the 2022 London Marathon because we want to help Meningitis Research Foundation achieve their goal of a world free from meningitis and septicaemia.
Alberto lost his sister Isabelle at the very young age of 2 years to meningitis. She was struck by the infection suddenly, her condition deteriorated rapidly, to the point where the medical intervention she received was unable to rescue her.
We wish that nobody has to go through this kind of trauma, and hope that our fundraising effort inches the world closer to eliminating this nasty and fatal disease. Meningitis and sepsis infect 2.5 million people annually, and kills 1 in 10 people who contract it, in some cases within 24 hours. In addition, it causes lifelong disabilities for 1 in 5 people that survive, such as hearing loss, visual and physical
impairment, cognitive disability and limb loss.
We are proud to be supporting the Meningitis Research Foundation, that is at the forefront of working with the WHO to defeat Meningitis by 2030.
Five interconnected pillars of work have been developed to achieve this visionary goal:
- Prevention and Epidemic Control – development and access to vaccines, and targeted interventions.
- Diagnosis and Treatment – improved diagnostics, health worker training and case management.
- Disease surveillance – accurate data to inform control policies and monitor progress.
- Support and Aftercare – Appropriate support for people, families and carers affected by meningitis.
- Advocacy and Engagement – raise public and political awareness of meningitis and its impact.
