On Sunday13th July I will be competing in a full Ironman competition in Zurich Switzerland. The race comprises of swimming 2.4 miles in Lake Zurich, cycling 112 miles through the ‘foothills’ of the local mountains and then running a full marathon.  The total time allowed is 16 hours. Remarkably the winner will only need something like 8 hours and 25 minutes.

My partner in this madness in Alastair Greenan who like me got into this for no better reason than because he likes a good challenge. We have since discovered that the triathlon is a superb and addictive sport. It is also one where there is great respect and camaraderie amongst the competitors. We highly recommend it.

We have steadily built up our training over the last 18 months which has included two half Ironman races. The first was in Monaco last year and the second was just five weeks ago in Zurich. The step up to the full Ironman however is massive and we are now at the very nervous stage where there is no time left to train and we just have to hope that we have done enough!

We haven’t done this alone as we have been massively supported by our wives Kate and Ellie to whom we owe a big thank you. We couldn’t have done this without them. We have said that after this event they will see more of us at weekends, we will attend to the backlog of household tasks and we will find something other than all things triathlon to talk about over dinner. Fortunately their expectations are that this won’t last long.

Recently the interest in our attempt has increased and it would clearly be a missed opportunity if we did not ensure that our endeavour was linked to charity fund raising of some sort.

We have considered a number of different charities but finally selected Cancer Research UK. This horrible disease affects many of us either directly or through people close to us. The work done by Cancer Research UK covers all aspects of research into prevention, cure and also into helping people who are living with cancer to have the best possible quality of life.

Your support will be for a good cause and will no doubt spur us on. We will of course let you know how we do.
