My challenge:
On 11 May 2022, I will be running 40 miles to coincide with the 40th commemoration of the Falklands conflict. My challenge will see me complete 160 laps of the athletics track at HMS Temeraire before culminating in a finishing mile dash to HMS Victory, Portsmouth Naval Base. Not only is this the Base from which the Falklands Task Force began their journey in April 1982 - its also where I spent much of my own Royal Navy service prior to losing my own sight.
I will be guided by a serving member of the Royal Navy, with the intention to complete the run in one go, and raise money for Blind Veterans UK.
Why am I undertaking this challenge?
I’m undertaking this ultra-run to help Blind Veterans UK support Falklands Veterans who have lost their sight, either during or after the conflict. The charity supports more than 20 Veterans of the 1982 mission to liberate the islands, in addition to over 4000 other blind veterans. Your donations to my fundraising target will enable the charity to fund community care and rehab support for these Veterans.
As a former member of the Royal Navy and someone who
knows first hand the impact of sight loss on a persons confidence, independence and ability to lead a fulfilling life, I feel honored to have this opportunity to help Blind Veterans UK support others in the way they supported me. I lost much if my sight in 2004. The support, rehabilitation, equipment and training Blind Veterans UK gave to me enabled me to re-train for a new career and live independently. They gave me the confidence to see beyond the limits of my sight loss and achieve things I thought would be impossible - from completing marathons and and Atlantic rowing challenge to being able to read my daughter a bedtime story.
