Hello
I've been thinking about participating in the ABC Bikers Challenge for a few years. I came close last year but managed to find yet another excuse not to! This time around, with my youngest daughter Jemima off to university, I realised I was out of excuses. So here we go!
The challenge itself starts on 18th November and entails cycling 420 km in 5 days from Knysna to Cape Town in South Africa. The goal is to raise money for ABC (Action for Burns and Children) - an organisation dedicated to the prevention of burn and scald injuries to children through basic fire prevention education in the home and the rehabilitation of seriously burned children. In 2013 ABC will work in partnership with the Pheonix Burns Project with a specific target area in and around Cape Town.
A recent WHO report concluded that burns are the most common cause of death amongst the under-2's in urban South Africa - it remains the third most common cause amongst the under-14's!
I've been doing a fair bit of biking over the summer and generally keeping myself fit. It's only now, some two months from kick off, that I realise I should be up to 2 x 20 km plus 1 x 40 km rides a week. By late October this needs to be 2 x 30 km plus 1 x 60km a week!! It frankly scares me but I guess it'll be alright on the night.
