Ogni anno Ramadan ci spinge a guardare al di fuori del nostro piccolo contesto e a reagire di fronte al bisogno di milioni di persone che vengono quotidianamente dimenticate.

L'Africa è stata dimenticata. Nella sua regione orientale ci sono ben 30 milioni di anime che hanno disperatamente bisogno di aiuti umanitari, di cui 5.5 milioni di bambini che soffrono di malnutrizione.

Torno da pochi mesi da un viaggio al confine tra Kenya e Somalia, dove ho assistito personalmente alla vastità e complessità di questo bisogno. In Africa orientale non piove più, e questo sta avendo conseguenze disastrose per colture, animali e persone, creando un ciclo vizioso di fame e povertà.

Non avrei mai immaginato di trovarmi un giorno di fronte ad Amani Mohani Hussein, una bimba di 6 anni che pesa come un bebè di 11 mesi. Lo strazio ed il dolore che ho provato nel vederla ansimante, senza nemmeno le forze per piangere, mi ha spezzato il cuore. Il trattamento per la malnutrizione è letteralmente la sua unica ancora di salvezza.

Così come mi ha riempito di gioia conoscere la resilienza della comunità di Garashi, che è tornata in vita grazie ad un impianto idrico alimentato ad energia solare installato da IR, e che oggi raggiunge più di 30 mila persone. Ho visto con i miei occhi la materializzazione della aya "e traemmo dall'acqua ogni essere vivente" (21:30), subhanAllah.

Questo Ramadan ho deciso di dedicarlo all'Africa, e ti chiedo di sostenere con me questa causa perché spesso dimentichiamo di avere il potere di porre fine al loro dolore. Se tutti i musulmani donassero la zakat, potremmo porre fine alla povertà globale, più e più volte.

Every year Ramadan pushes us to look beyond the context we live in and to react to the needs of millions of people who are forgotten every day.

Africa has been forgotten. Its eastern region counts more than 30 million souls who desperately need aid, including 5.5 million children suffering from malnutrition.

I just returned from the borders between Kenya and Somalia, where I witnessed first hand the vastness and complexity of the situation there. It is no longer raining in East Africa, and this is a disaster for crops, animals and people, creating a vicious cycle of hunger and poverty.

Never would I have imagined to find myself in front of beautiful Amani Mohani Hussein, a 6-year-old girl who weighs as an 11-month-old baby. The pain I felt seeing her suffering, with no energy in her body to even cry out that suffering, broke my heart. The malnutrition treatment is literally her only chance to survive.

It was also a joy to see the resilience of the Garashi community, coming back to life thanks to a solar-powered water system implemented by IR, and which today reaches more than 30,000 people. I saw with my own eyes the meaning of the aya "and We made every living being out of water" (21:30), subhanAllah.

This Ramadan I want us to come together to respond to the needs of our brothers and sisters in Africa. We often forget that we really have the power to end their pain, if all Muslims donated zakat, we could end global poverty over and over again.
