This year I turn 41,the age my mum was when she was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Cancer casts a long shadow for those who have it , have had it, have lost a loved one or friend to it or knows someone that has.
The good news is that thanks to the work of cancer research and others the survival rates have improved a lot over the last 20+ years since my mum was first diagnosed.
So rather than living in fear of history repeating itself I’ve decided to do something more positive. On the way 17th June Isla and I are running the Falkirk Race for Life 5k. Then in September Isla is going to run the Great Scottish Junior run which is 2.5k and Euan will run the family mile. The day after I will run the great Scottish 10k. While I’ve run quite a few 5k’s I’ve never tried to run 10k so this run is the real challenge!
When we are running we’ll be thinking of those who like my mum who fought until they could fight no more, those who continue to fight and everyone who lives in its shadow.
In the 70’s only a quarter of people diagnosed with cancer survived 10 years or more, today half of those diagnosed will survive. Cancer research aim that in another 20 years three quarters will survive that won’t totally remove the shadow but it will certainly help to make it a lot smaller.

P.S. if I start running lots of 10k’s after this I promise I won’t ask for sponsorship for all of them unless I decide to run further in the future!!!
