I don't like flying, I can't stand heights and I've never even considered jumping out of a plane. So I have no idea why I've chosen to do a skydive to raise money for Fitzroy. I was just doing some admin work and logging into the hub when I saw the link. Next thing I know I've signed up for a tandem jump.
In my spare time I perform stand up comedy around the UK so I could have done a show instead. I could've safely stood on a stage. That does not scare me. People often say, "Oh I couldn't stand in front of all those people, it's so brave." It isn't brave. Being a fireman is brave. Jumping is much scarier as at no time doing comedy have I fallen from 10,000ft strapped to a stranger while reaching speeds up to 120 miles an hour. Yet on June 21st in Salisbury, I shall be doing just that.
I'm also too heavy to do the jump so I now have to lose 2 stone. For the first time in my life I'm dieting which means not only am I terrified I'm also hungry. I've already lost 7lbs and have discovered that clothes don't have to be described as 'snug.'
I'm pretty sure it's not a mid-life crisis. I'm happily married and have never even wanted a sports car or to date someone half my age. We recently need a new car and so I bought one that was perfect for me. It's a Renault Twingo. What I'm saying is that I've never seen myself as a Tom Cruise type. (Unless the next Mission Impossible film features Tom sitting on a sofa for it's duration) Adventure is not my middle name. It's Cornelius.
So why am I doing it? Well the answer is simple. It's the same reason why we all work at Fitzroy. It's because we care about the people we help and if I can raise a little money to help them a bit more then it's worth it.
So if you'd like to donate then you can find my Just Giving page under my name. Not my full name as I'm off now to change my middle name to 'Danger.'
Many thanks
Aidan 'Danger' Goatley
