Story
Four years ago Avon Fire & Rescue Service campaigned through a series of public events to fundraise for a young boy called Jaye. Like Daisy, Jaye has cerebal palsy and he needed an operation to enable him to walk unaided. We succeeded in getting him that operation and through alot of public pressure, the operation was even made free on the NHS in 6 pilot hospitals for one year.
Regretfully, the operation is under review again, requiring families of children with cerebal palsy to pay around £25,000 for the SDR[Selective Dorsal Rhyzotomy] and around twice that for the post operation physio etc.
Daisy is 3 and her family has approached us to help fundraise for this spinal operation, which historically has had such a life changing effect on so many children with cerebal palsy. As with Jaye, who has benefitted enormously from his operation, we feel that Daisy deserves to have the same opportunity to improve her quality of life and hopefully walk unaided.
Members of the Brigade will be holding a series of public events to fund raise for Daisy's cause. The first of these will be at the Mall, Cribbs Causeway, Bristol between 10am-4pm on 17th February 2018. The main event will be a 60 hour event, spread over 5 days, 8am-8pm on each day between 4th-8th May 2018, which is the May Bank holiday. This event will be taking place at Cabot Circus, Bristol. Members of Avon Fire & Rescue Service will be running on treadmills throughout the 60 hours and there will be simultaneous exercise on other equipment, such as rowers, cycles, turbo trainers, steppers and cross trainers. Hopefully over 1200 miles will be covered by those actively involved.
We raised nearly £40,000 for Jaye in 2014. It would be great if we could raise half that figure. The desire and generosity of the Bristol public has always inspired me and I'm sure the public will be offering Daisy all the support they can.
