Story

Help Afrika Tikkun support communities survive the Coronavirus.

We are facing an urgent crisis in South Africa that will unfold in the coming weeks if coronavirus spreads across our communities as it has all over the world.

The township communities we work in have high levels of poverty and limited access to health care, knowledge and resources. Simply put: people don’t have a safety net to protect themselves and each other from COVID 19 - no paid sick leave to stay at home; no cash to spare to see them through; no ability to stockpile food; no straight forward way to get treated if a ventilator or critical care is needed. With many townships consisting of shack dwelling, social distancing and isolation is extremely difficult.

We have to take urgent pre-emptive steps to stem the effects of COVID-19 in our most vulnerable communities. Help us implement a safety net for the township communities Afrika Tikkun serves in South Africa. You will save lives.

Portrait Details

Andrew Mlangeni stood in the dock alongside Nelson Mandela as Accused #10 at The Rivonia Trial, with other giants of the anti-apartheid movement.

Andrew spent 26 years in prison for a free South Africa - 18 of which he spent on Robben Island - before going on to spend 20 years serving in its Parliament. The creation of a multi-racial and democratic South Africa is one of the last century’s most significant human achievements.

At the Rivonia Trial, Andrew ended his statement by simply setting out how he has lived his entire life: “I did what I did not for myself, but for the people of South Africa."

A call to that spirit is what we need in this moment, facing a deadly opponent that we can only prevent by acting together, for all.

The portrait is signed by Andrew Mlangeni and is one of a Limited Edition of just 10.

It is also signed by its photographer - Matthew Willman, a renowned South African photographer who has been commissioned to take portraits of individuals from a cross-section of the global community. Commissions include: US Presidents Bill Clinton & Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, President FW De Klerk, Annie Lennox, 12 presidents, 8 Nobel Laureates and a host of sports personalities musicians, politicians and philanthropists.

Matthew is perhaps best known for his portraits of Nelson Mandela, taken as a commissioned photographer to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and through ten years of work with Mr Mandela himself.
