Story
Hi, and many thanks for taking the time to help me give something back to the National Society for Epilepsy
Please remember that around 70% with epilepsy are able to control their seizures with medication and lead a normal life. Without the work of charities, like the NSE, this would not be possible.
I am one of the lucky ones! But many people with epilepsy aren't able to live their lives without constant forethought and wondering when their next seizure will happen and what injuries will come with it. It is due to this and the support that the NSE has given me and my friends/family over the years that I have decided to do this to help them help others, whether it be through research towards new and better methods to control seizures or their support, for example the literature, helpline and forums they run.
My personal story:
Epilepsy does not stop me from living my life!
I was first diagnosed 21 years ago 27/01/1989 (2 days after passing my driving test - back to the buses!) although it turned out I had been having seizures that had gone unnoticed ever since I was a toddler. I used to hear the music from the magic roundabout whenever having them until about 10 years ago - I miss that! I managed to have them controlled by medication, got my driving licence back and life carried on.
Until about 10 years ago when out of the blue, they returned. To cut a long story short, I have tried all the current medications available and was unable to work for 5 years due to the side effects. Unable to find any that worked for me, I looked into having brain surgery. I decided against this after the tests had been done as the odds were not in my favour. My memory may have been worse meaning I would not be able to do the work I do now and my eyesight may be impaired meaning I would never get my driving licence back.
Two years ago I had my gadget fitted (vagal nerve stimulator) which basically sends electric impulses into my brain to try to prevent the 'electric storm' that happens when someone has a seizure. This has helped, although I do still have seizures.
Some good has come out of this. Whilst unable to work I took the opportunity to study and take a career change. I now work for myself from home, and have done for the last 5 years as an accountant.
