Story

What's the challenge??

On may 25th & 26th, I will be trekking the Atacama desert in Peru in the hope of raising money to go towards GVI charitable trust that will contribute directly to the work i'm doing in schools here!

Me and a small team of fellow volunteers will trek a total of 30km across the world's second driest region - only losing out on first place to icy antarctica! Our challenge with take us 2 full days to complete and thats including super early starts...imagine trekking through 40degree heat at 4am!!

We will begin our challenge along the pacific coast with a 16km hike towards Camana. We will then take a short break to cram some lunch down and then continue our trek with another 8km hike until we reach out campsite for the night. After we try to get some shut eye in the freezing desert (might be hot in the day but temperatures at night can reach 0 degrees!) we will then complete our trek after another 6km hike!

But why?

After spending quality time with the beautiful children here and teaching them, I've realised how important the work is that GVI does and how much it can provide a sense of direction and hope to the lives of the poor and indigenous communities here. It is vital that we continue to support them and to give them access to give them access to good quality primary and secondary education, to ensure that they do get at least one hot meal and piece of fruit every day. GVI is unlike a lot of other volunteer projects as its main focus is becoming completely sustainable...they have proven successful in many areas and we are now starting to see some of the kids that have passed through their schools gain access to Colleges and Universities. This would never have been accessible to them without the hard work put in by GVI.

As I hear of the closure of our Brazil project due to lack of funding it makes me scared that unless we do something the same could happen here. All funds raised through this challenge will contribute directly towadrs teachers salaries in the hope that we can secure a source of education for all children in our schools and to support the higher education of our kids when they leave our primary schools. Just £7.50 would send a child to secondary school for a year and £15 would give 40 children a hot school meal every day for an entire year!
