Story
My name is Adrian Parsons, also known as Horace. I have been involved in Surf Life Saving since the age of 12, when I joined Bude Surf Life Saving Club. Our club is the first affiliated surf life saving club in the northern hemisphere, being formed on the 9th of August, 1953. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of our club and the arrival of surf life saving in Great Britain, I am going to attempt to visit all the surf life saving clubs, on the English coast.
Throughout the last 60 years surf life savers have saved thousands of people who have found themselves in difficulty in the sea. Our clubs carry out voluntary patrols on the beaches, assisting the professional lifeguards. Many of the rescues carried out by club members happen out of hours, when there are no lifeguards on the beach. We are the true volunteers on the beach.
We train and educate young people in how to be safe in or on the sea, encouraging them all to take awards, which will turn them into the beach lifeguards of the future. A large percentage of professional lifeguards come through the ranks of surf life saving clubs, with the professional lifeguard services originating from surf life saving clubs, when the local councils used the surf club members to work on the beaches..
For this reason I am trying to raise funds for this organisation, which gets very little recognition for the work we do.
