Story
Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's several years ago and sadly passed away last year, in a Care Home during the Covid lockdown.
Growing old is never easy. Growing old and developing Alzheimer's adds other difficulties. Especially to those around you. They gradually become carers by default. Imagine how it is when your life partner suddenly no longer acts the same way. They are no longer predictable, they are no longer dependable. They become dependent on you and they don't understand why the balance has changed. But they are still your life partner - through thick and thin.
I needed to do something (however small), I do this for my Mother, who cared for my Father for as long as she was able (perhaps longer) and for the countless other partner/carers still doing this today.
I'd really like to hope that I'm doing this to help find a cure for Alzheimer's in the future.
