Why Cancer Research UK?
I am an avid supporter of their work for years ever since I ran my first Race for Life back in 2007. In 2008, my grandma lost her battle to bowel cancer. That year I ran my second Race for Life in her memory. On 17th July 2016, we lost our late Papa to bowel cancer. Within a space of two weeks in intensive care, he never fully recovered and sadly passed away twelve days before his 66th birthday. Papa knew he had cancer on his last visit to UK back in 2015. He kept it to himself. Cancer is a vicious disease and quick to take your loved ones away. I sincerely hope I can raise as much money towards the very important work that CRUK do. Their research include early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of different type of cancers, clinical trials, disseminate information and also support cancer patients via their online forum and nurse helpline.
Why Yorkshire Marathon 2018?
Running a marathon is one out of four personal challenges I have set myself for 2018. Running and prayer have been my way of coping with bereavement. Training started back in October 2017 and has been pretty consistent. This involved running at least 4 times a week in all weather conditions. As a mum of two, it is a balancing act of juggling family life, work, training and rest days to avoid over-training and injuries. Other than a blip with high heart rate which I found was due to my Garmin watch and signs of overtraining in the early days, I have taken every reasonable steps to ensure I am fit enough to commit to this challenge. These include undergoing a full blood test, two ECGs and even lactate testing. So science is helping me to improve my performance and setting my expectations! I am running with my running buddy, Lesley Gray who has also lost her mum to cancer.
What are my goals?
Firstly, raise as much as possible for this wonderful charity to enable them to continue their valuable work and ultimately save more lives.
Secondly, finish the marathon safely and injury free. If I manage a sub-5 hours run, that will be pretty awesome. It's only my first marathon so I do want to 'enjoy' it.
It doesn't matter how big or small your donation, it will be much appreciated! Thank you for your generosity.
Love,
