Ride4Rangers
Campaign by Tusk Trust (RCN 1186533)
Across Africa, the halting of tourism is threatening the livelihoods of rangers and the continent's iconic wildlife. Rangers are the first line of defence to protect endangered specialises and our aim is to support them at this critical time.

Story

We're two friends who share a love of Africa and a passion for its wildlife. We also happen to share an inability to ride a bike. So, since we're safer on two feet than on two wheels, between us we're aiming to run a total of 100 km over the 10 days of the Ride4Rangers LEJOG Challenge, taking place from August 15-25, 2020.

We both work in the Africa tourism sector, Sue Watt as a freelance writer specialising in travel and conservation for UK press and magazines and Adele Cutler as a freelance PR specialising in African clients. Having travelled to Africa's wild places over several years, we're deeply grateful for all that rangers do, risking their lives every day to protect the wildlife we love. Please help us to help them by donating to our run. Many thanks for your support.

Why #Ride4Rangers?

Covid-19 has dealt a devastating blow to Africa's tourism which is inextricably linked to the protection of wildlife, paying the bulk of ranger costs and salaries through park fees and conservation levies. If tourism stops, the money dries up, ranger patrols are reduced and poaching inexorably rises, potentially decimating years of conservation success.

Rangers are the first line of defence to protect endangered species but in many places, there is no longer the funding for them.

We're proud to be joining the African Travel Industry in raising funds to support African Rangers and wildlife by joining #Ride4Rangers. All funds raised will go towards supporting the salaries and deployment of African Rangers during this crisis.

Tusk is aiming to support 5,000 rangers over the next 6-9 months and has been established with generous match-funding, doubling the impact of every penny given. Here's how your support could help!

  • £100 could purchase a GPS enabled camera to monitor wildlife
  • £200 could fund a Lion Guard Rangers salary for a month
  • £250 could provide materials needed to build a predator-proof livestock enclosure
  • £500 could sponsor a 4-man anti-poaching team in the field for a month.
