Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I would very much appreciate it if you would contribute to Asha for Education - a secular organization dedicated to providing opportunities for basic education to India's neediest children.

What am I doing:

I've just completed the Tour of Nilgiris ... a 7-day / 750 km (ok 8-day ... there was a rest day in the middle!) bicycle ride through some amazingly picturesque parts of South India. Oh - and it had over 7000m of climbs!

http://www.tourofnilgiris.com/index.htm

Why:

- needed my mid-life crisis - and am not mad about Harleys or Porsches

- the hills were just there - waiting to be climbed

- it seemed like a neat thing to do

My goals / what I accomplished:

- Complete each day, without getting into the support vehicle ---> managed 6.5 days out of 7 ... had to stop after around 60km on Day 4, as my ankle gave way after a murderous 40km uphill / downhill ride on the worst roads in India

- Complete the tour without any injury to body or pride! ---> pride fully upheld; injury - am nursing a weakened ankle as a result of acute achilles tendonitis ... nothing that a few days of R&R wont sort out!

- Raise £1500 for Asha ---> if you are visiting this page, you will be able to see how much I have raised so far

While I had done a few longish bike rides over the last couple of years, including a couple of century-rides ... I'd never done it 2-days in a row ... or 3 ... or 4!!! This indeed was the hardest physical thing I have ever done - and ranks up there with it being one of the hardest mental exercises ever as well.

About Asha for Education

Asha for Education is a secular organization dedicated to change in India through basic education, that is a a critical requisite for socio-economic change.

Over the years, Asha has succeeded in touching the lives of thousands of children across the different projects that it has supported. However, we also realize that there is still a lot to be achieved since there are millions of children in India who do not have access to basic education.

Till date, Asha has supported more than 385 different projects spanning 24 states in India. In terms of project funding, almost $4,000,000 has been disbursed to these projects since Asha's inception in 1991.
