Story
Dear all,
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
There are currently 400,000 people in the UK with Type 1 Diabetes, over 29,000 of them are children. This cause is close to my heart as my son Rhodri was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes aged 11. Although this hit him and the whole family by surprise, he was fortunate enough to great team around him at our local hospital as well as close family and friends with medical experience who supported him at this crucial age.
Rhodri has not allowed his diabetes to define him and has gone on to play rugby at a very high level playing Championship Rugby, appearing at the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2018, Commonwealth Games 2018 and is currently training hard for a final push to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. He is the first to admit that all of this would not have been possible without "the great team at Royal Hants County Hospital as well as his friends and family".
This is not the case for everyone and with 29,000 children in the UK fighting Type 1 Diabetes, JDRF aim to fund world-class research to help cure, treat and prevent Type 1 Diabetes. JDRF also aim to make sure research moves forwards and the latest treatments are delivered as fast as possible, as well as giving support and a voice to those young people fighting Type 1 Diabetes and their families.
Although we seem someway off finding a cure for Type 1 Diabetes, it is the support and voice that JDRF offer that I want all young Type 1 Diabetics to hear. Support allowed our family, and mainly Rhodri, to not be halted by Type 1 Diabetes and I am therefore aiming to raise £1500.00 for JDRF to help ensure that other young diabetics and their families receive similar support.
Diabetes doesn't have to limit or define you and until we find a cure, young Type 1 Diabetics around the country need help, support and a voice from JDRF.
I am currently training hard and throwing my body up and around the hills of Winchester to get fit for the London Landmarks Half Marathon. It has been a couch to 5km (and onwards!) battle and i am training hard to make sure I am ready for March 29th 2020. If you could please donate what you can i would be very grateful...
This is my Chesney Hawkes - "my one and only".
Love,
Charlotte x
