Story

In January 2017 my dad received the heartbreaking news that he had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a condition that affects the brain and nerves for which there is no cure, progressively worsening over time and reducing life expectancy. Understandably me and my family were devastated.

My dad fought a hard battle and unfortunately passed away in August 2021. My dad had always been pragmatic and matter of fact, he rarely complained and utilised all his knowledge of technology, having been an electronics engineer, to live his life to the full. We have so many happy memories of him.

My dad loved adventure and the great outdoors. He inspired my own love for our wonderful national parks and with that my ambition for endurance sport. I also learnt the true benefits of physical activity and I am fortunate to explore this passion in my role as an Academic General Practitioner where my research focus is promoting physical activity.

Many years ago I used to compete in athletics at a reasonable level and it was my ambition one day to compete in a marathon. Given my first ever race was a sponsored charity 10km run aged 16 in my home town, it seems fitting that my first marathon should be in memory of my dad and to raise money for a great cause, the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA)

Me and my family would be extremely grateful of any donations which will go to MNDA, which focus on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by MND.
