Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Adam Wall. I am 16 years old and attend The Charles Dickens School, Broadstairs.
Following success at the 2010 British Transplant Games, held in Bath, I have been selected to represent the United Kingdom at the World Transplant Games to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden. I will be one of 15 juniors and 120 adults representing the UK. This is the first time I have been selected and very excited. Over 1,000 transplant recipients from around the world take part; to raise awareness of the benefits of organ transplantation and to highlight the need for organ donors, whilst also celebrating our second chance at life. All participants have received a life-saving organ transplant – be it heart, lung, liver, kidney, pancreas or bone marrow.
As a member of the UK team I am required to raise my own funds to pay for travel, accommodation, insurance and team kit, and to cover the cost of attending three team UK training days at Warwick University. The estimated cost of my participation at the Games is £1,200 per person and because I am a junior competitor my family will be accompanying me at a cost of £1000 each. Any contribution you would be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.
I will be taking part in the 100m, long jump and high jump. I train with Thanet Roadrunners.
I was diagnosed at 9 weeks old with a rare liver disease called Alagille Syndrome which affects 1 in 100,000 births each year. I was unable to feed properly and therefore didn’t grow very well. I also suffered with severe itching all over my body which couldn’t be controlled. I also had very high cholesterol which caused very hard fatty lumps which were very painful around my ankles, elbows and fingers which were painful if they were knocked. My quality of life was very poor and my Mum and Dad made the difficult decision to put me forward for a liver transplant. I waited 6 months and on July 28th 1997 when I was 2 1/2 years old I received a very special gift, new liver. I was in and out of hospital many times afterwards with rejection but after a couple of years things settled down. Now I am fighting fit and enjoying life.
At the British Transplant Games I compete for the Kings College children’s team and last year won the cup for best team member. I have made many friends since attending the BTG and it’s great to meet up with them each year.
