Did you know, 93% of people registered blind or partially sighted can still see something? - RNIB
I recently have taken up boxing for fitness and fun with next to no intentions of competing in the sport. My PT, GFP coaches and myself have decided I am ready to do something completely out of my comfort zone and do a charity bout with Prospect Boxing Promotions at Trinity Park! When I was 16, I was registered partially sighted with a condition called Macular Dystrophy, I still have vision in my peripheries which helps me massively but with Macular dystrophy it affects the central part of your vision. Through my central vision I struggle to see things clearly however, I can see certain contrasts and movements but unfortunately this isn't clear at all. Whilst boxing I use my peripheries extensively to track and avoid punches using everything I can see to the best of my ability. While I will struggle to see some punches I am training hard to keep my opponent in my peripheries to be at the best chance of winning. Win, lose or draw though however, this will be a huge thing for me in my life, proving to myself and others that people with visual impairments are not useless or something to be overlooked and that we can still do so much even though we are not fully sighted. I am raising money for Guide dogs as they have helped me so much throughout my diagnosis and they have changed my life completely making me more mobile and helping me walk so much faster and independently like I use to before I started losing my sight!
