Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I will be taking on the National Three Peaks Challenge on 4th-5th September in memory of my mum, Ingrid, and to try and raise funds for St Ann's Hospice.
The brilliant staff at the hospice in Little Hulton took great care of my mum for a number of months before she passed away last September. She also spent a number of years prior to her illness working as a Medical Secretary at St Ann's, so our family have a strong connection with the hospice and it would be good to give something back to help support the amazing work they do.
Please help me support the hospice by donating whatever you can. I have set a target of £500 but I know we can smash this!
It is hard to express what a loving and caring woman my mum was, especially now she is no longer with us. I have added some photos to this page to try and share her beauty, so feel free to take a look.
If you wish to know more about what my mum went through before she passed away, please read on.
Thank you. Adam
My mum was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia back in 2007 and underwent chemotherapy a few years later. Despite this, she continued to live a relatively normal life with regular antibody top ups and the support of her family.
A number of years ago she started suffering chronic bowel infections, requiring regular hospital admissions and electrolyte replacements as she was unable to absorb the required nutrients.
Due to further weight loss, she was admitted to Salford Royal in October 2019 for nutritional support, testing positive for Covid-19 during her time there. She overcame this and was eventually discharged in April with a broviac line fitted to her chest so that she could be fed intravenously.
The intravenous feed made no positive change to my mum's health. If anything, it reduced her quality of life as it was required for 10-12 hours every day and only made her bloated and nauseous.
In June, she was referred to the palliative care team at St Ann's Hospice to see if they could help manage her symptoms. However, the symptoms only got worse and she continued to lose weight.
In July, she told us that she no longer wished to continue her treatment and agreed to gradually reduce the frequency of her feeds in the hope of regaining some quality of life, knowing it may well shorten what time she had left with us.
My mum passed away on 5th September 2020.
I hope to reach the summit of the third and final peak of this challenge on the morning of 5th September 2021, exactly one year after Ingrid was taken away from all those who loved her dearly.
